First some books on Photoshop and Photography

Photography - A Cultural History - Mary Warner Marien
A comprehensive, authoratative tome packed with material. She covers the cultural and political impact of photography as it developed from early experiments in the UK and France through to the present day.

The Moment It Clicks - Joe McNally
A catalogue of different photographs by shooter Joe McNally. He accompanies each one with an outline of how he approached each one and what lessons he drew from it. Particularly strong on lighting.

The Photographer's Eye - Michael Freeman
An excellent book looking at image composition from the point of view of a photographer, very approachable. Some of you will know a lot of it, but nonetheless it's a good thorough overview, and interesting to frame (ahem) it all from the perspective of photography.

Understanding Exposure - Bryan Peterson
An intermediate book on a difficult but important topic. Exposure is trickier now in the digital arena and understanding how to control it to get the outcome you wish is key to success.

Perfect Exposure - Michael Freeman
Freeman's book is intermediate to advanced and covers exposure in depth, detailing different scenarios and outlining how he approaches them. He has his own system which is based loosely on the zone system promoted by Ansel Adams.

Photoshop

Quite a few of the labs have now upgraded to CS5. Virtually all of these books will still apply. It is just the newer features in CS5 which won't be addressed.

Photoshop CS4 Digital Classroom - Jennifer Smith
For beginners to Photoshop. The official guide from Adobe, it's a successor to the materials we cover in class.

Photoshop CS4 for Photographers - Martin Evening
This book on CS4 is for intermediate to advanced users, Evening talks through CS4 in detail, aimed more at a deeper undersanding than imparting techniques, it requires a certain level of experience. Excellent book..

The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers - Scott Kelby
Kelby can be irritating to some so fair warning, but he has lots of good tips here. For beginning to intermediate Photoshop users, a lot of straight quick how-tos.
Stacks Image 1181
The Art of Photoshop - Daniel Giordan
Covers taking photographs and processing them in Photoshop for illustrative as opposed to straightforward photographic purposes. Definitely for intermediate to advanced Photoshop users but includes a good guide for beginning photography.

Final Cut Pro 7 Visual Quickstart Guide - Lisa Brenneis
Lisa Brenneis was the first author to cover Final Cut Pro in real approachable depth and has carved out a indispensible role on editors bookshelves ever since.

iMovie 09 and iDVD - Jeff Carlson
A solid, thorough overview of these two easy to use apps. Carlson covers a lot more than I get to do in class. Browse through to check out all the options.
The books listed here are in the College Library, as I get them to add more, I'll update this list.

Feel free to make suggestions for new books or if you think the Library should order additional copies of any particular volume.
